1997-12-06 Luis Ramon Campas w rsc 8 Raul Marquez, Boardwalk Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: James Condon. The fight began slowly with both men having a good look at each other, Campas (154) taking his time and the champion sending out southpaw jabs. That all changed at the end of the third when Marquez (153½) picked up a swollen right eye and a bad gash over his left eye following an exchange of blows. Somehow Marquez kept going, but with Campas getting to him and the blood flowing he was badly rocked by combinations in the seventh. Bravely fighting on, the unbeaten Marquez was finally rescued by the referee at 2.29 of the eighth while being battered by a torrent of punches on the ropes with nowhere to go. Prior to the fight it had been feared that the facial damage which saw Marquez have 70 stitches inserted after his previous contest had not had enough time to heal.
