1997-12-12 Erik Morales w rtd 7 John Lowey, The Auditorium, Tijuana, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Laurence Cole. Fighting with surprising fury which was uncharacteristic it must be said, the challenger tore into Morales (120½) in order to stop him settling down and to force him on to the back foot. With the early rounds resembling a roughouse, Morales was cut on the right eye in the third from a butt and the referee deducted a point from Lowey (119). In the fifth, two more points were deducted from Lowey, for butting and elbowing, respectively, but by the sixth, Morales was into his stride and beginning to put his punches together. Although it was starting to look ominous for the Irishman, it was still a surprise when he retired on his stool at the end of the seventh after damaging his right hand.
