17 January Juan Cordoba w pts 12 Melchor Cob Castro, Olympic Cycling Club, Santiago Del Estero, Argentina - WBO. Referee: Roberto Ramirez. Scorecards: 117-115, 115-114, 116-112. Having a second crack at a version of the world title in his 38th contest, Cordoba (107½) finally came good when beating Cob Castro (107¾) after a hard fight that tested both men. The southpaw champion had started reasonably enough, but with crowd behind Cordoba their man was in front at the halfway stage. Cob Castro was not done for and putting on a spurt he was right back in the fight by the tenth, his two-handed attacks, especially to the body, battering away at Cordoba. However, from thereon the challenger regained control with fast, hard punches reaching the target, and was good value for the win.
