1998-01-24 Joe Calzaghe w rsc 3 Branko Sobot, International Arena, Cardiff, Wales - WBO. Referee: Paul Thomas. Coming in as a replacement for Tarick Salmaci, Sobot (166½), was soon under fire from the champion’s educated fists and despite showing a good defence he was put down for a count of ‘three’ in the third round. Back in action, Sobot was hit with all manner of blows as Calzaghe (167¾) went into overdrive before the referee stopped the fight on the 1.35 mark after a cracking left to the head had left the Croatian shaken and bewildered. Both men were southpaws.
