1998-02-21 [[Khalid Rahilou]] w pts 12 [[Jean-Baptiste Mendy]], Bercy Sports Palace, Paris, France - WBA. Referee: Carlos Berrocal. Scorecards: 115-111, 115-112, 114-113. After the first couple of rounds saw both men cautious, Mendy (139) broke the tension when dropping the champion for ‘four’ with a right hook in the third, but was unable to find a finishing blow. The contest then swayed back and forth as both men looked to get their punches off and there was never much between them. Even after the ninth, when Rahilou (139¾) knocked Mendy over with a right and followed it up in the next session with an all-out attack did the latter back down. Coming out for the 11th it could be seen that Rahilou had tired himself out, but he still found the punches to hurt Mendy and in the 12th the latter gave it everything to win the round but it was not enough.
