1998-03-07 Julio Cesar Chavez drew 12 Miguel Angel Gonzalez, The Bullring, Mexico City, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Lupe Garcia. Scorecards: 115-114, 114-116, 115-115. Contesting the title vacated by Oscar De La Hoya, Gonzalez (140) and Chavez (140) fought a draw according to the official verdict, but had the 115-115 scorecard been added up correctly it would have been marked 115-114 to Gonzalez, thus making him the new champion. As it was, Gonzalez seemed to have the better of the once great Chavez, especially early on, but it was extremely close and with no knockdowns to help and the latter winning three of the last five sessions the championship would have to be decided another time.
Following Chavez’ decision to move up a weight, Gonzalez was matched against the mandatory challenger, Kostya Tszyu, to decide the vacant title. Unfortunately Gonzalez was then forced to pull out with rib damage and Tszyu went on to win the WBC ‘interim’ championship, stopping Diobelys Hurtado inside five rounds at the Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California on 28 November. The pair would eventually meet to decide the title on 21 August 1999.
