1998-03-21 Carlos Salazar w pts 12 Jose Lopez, Accion Club, Roque Saenz Pena, Chaco, Argentina - WBO. Referee: Larry Rozadilla. Scorecards: 116-111, 115-111, 113-115. Since losing to Alberto Jimenez in June 1996, Lopez had put together four inside-the-distance wins and was seen as a dangerous opponent for the southpaw champion. It was not a convincing performance by Salazar (111¾), many of the rounds being close with Lopez (111¼) making most of the running while looking to land heavy right hands. Being deducted a point for low blows in the ninth hardly helped Lopez’s cause, but despite that one of the judges had him winning.
