1998-04-03 Freddie Norwood w pts 12 Antonio Cermeno, Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum, Bayamon, Puerto Rico - WBA. Referee: Roberto Ramirez. Scorecards: 117-110, 118-110, 118-112. Fighting for the vacant title after Wilfredo Vazquez had failed to go through with a defence against Cermeno (126), the chunky Norwood (126), a southpaw, overcame a huge reach disadvantage to batter his way to the title against the strangely subdued Venezuelan. Failing to make anything of his advantages, Cermeno mainly pursued a lethargic left jab and move routine which played right into Norwood’s hands. It was only in the final stages that Cermeno got himself going, but flooring the American twice with low blows certainly did not help his case. In the final session a huge straight left nearly took the ungainly Cermeno’s head off, and although he remained on his feet it merely emphasised the gap between the two fighters.
