1998-04-03 Jorge Eliecer Julio w rsc 9 Daniel Jimenez, Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum, Bayamon, Puerto Rico - WBO. Referee: Luis Rivera. Having been awarded the title following the abdication of Robbie Regan, this was Julio’s first defence and he found it hard to get to grips with the fleet-footed Jimenez (117½), who made a difficult target. Eventually, the harder-punching Julio (117) got his left jab-hook routine working well and as the challenger began to tire his body shots also began to take their toll. Suddenly it was the end of the contest. During an exchange of blows in the ninth session, Julio crossed Jimenez with a heavy right to the temple, which left the challenger entangled in the ropes and helpless before the referee called it off with three seconds on the clock remaining.
