Making the first defence of the title, the hard-punching Pastrana (108) took control from the opening bell and outboxed Roga (106½), the left jab continually keeping the challenger off balance despite him being a decent boxer. Down at the end of the third, Roga was counted out at 1.20 of the fourth after a flurry of blows had sent him to his knees, where he remained until the contest was deemed to be over.

On 29 August 1998 at the Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, Pastrana (109¾) forfeited the IBF version of the title when coming in over the weight for a defence against [[Carlos Murillo]] (108). The fight went ahead, with Murillo being knocked out in the ninth round, but had he won he would have been proclaimed champion.
