1998-05-16 Jean-Baptiste Mendy w pts 12 Orzubek Nazarov, Bercy Sports Palace, Paris, France - WBA. Referee: Carlos Berrocal. Scorecards: 116-111, 116-112, 118-112. In a battle of southpaws, the challenger fought on the back foot throughout, sending in jabs and quick combinations before moving away, while Nazarov (134½) was strangely lethargic and seemed unable to get to grips with his opponent. The closest Mendy (132¼) came to losing was when a head clash caused two bad cuts over his right eye in the seventh. Coming out for the last round, with Mendy’s face a mess he was in danger of being stopped if Nazarov could find him, but apart from a big left that was it, the decision being a formality.
