1998-06-13 Cesar Bazan w pts 12 Steve Johnston, The Sunbowl, El Paso, Texas, USA - WBC. Referee: Lupe Garcia. Scorecards: 115-113, 115-113, 112-116. By battling at close quarters almost throughout, the six-foot Bazan (133¾) disregarded his reach advantages and was more than happy to match Johnston (133) as the pair swapped blows as if there was no tomorrow. Despite picking up damage to his right eye in the fourth, the southpaw champion continued to stay on Bazan’s chest before the latter took a step back in the eighth to finally get the jab working. However, they were soon back flailing away at each other. When the bell rang to signify the end of the contest the majority at ringside plumped for the champion, but it had been a difficult fight to score and when Bazan received the verdict Johnston accepted it with good grace.
