1998-06-13 Oscar De La Hoya w rsc 3 Patrick Charpentier, The Sunbowl, El Paso, Texas, USA - WBC. Referee: Laurence Cole. Showing his ruthless streak, the champion edged up on Charpentier (146) in the opening two rounds, having a good look at what the shorter man had to offer, before unleasing his big punches in the third. Although Charpentier started the session with a rush, a fast right-left hook exploded on his head and he was down for ‘five’. On getting back into the fray the Frenchman must have realised the end game was nigh and two rib benders followed by a crunching left uppercut to the chin had him over again, this time for ‘six’. Moments later, after De La Hoya (147) had sent Charpentier down for the third time with a right over the top the referee immediately called a halt, the finish being timed at 1.56.
