1998-07-10 Freddie Norwood w pts 12 Luis Mendoza, Miccosukee Events Centre, Miami, Florida, USA - WBA. Referee: Brian Garry. Scorecards: 119-108, 117-108, 117-109. Defending the title for the second time in 27 days, Norwood (125½) made an excellent start when blasting Mendoza (126) almost out of the ring with a solid right in the second round. That was before he was deducted a point when smashing in a left to the head with Mendoza sitting between the ropes. Despite this, Mendoza, showing good skills without ever looking likely to win, came back well only to be dropped for an ’eight’ count just before the final bell. Norwood lost the WBA version of the title on the scales when weighing in at 127½lbs for a defence against Koji Matsumoto on 22 September 1998 at the Toyogi Gym, Tokyo, Japan, but despite that the fight went ahead with Norwood winning on a tenth-round stoppage.
