1998-07-18 Carl Thompson w rsc 9 Chris Eubank, The Arena, Sheffield, England - WBO. Referee: Paul Thomas. Making a great start, the aggressive Eubank (189) took the opening six rounds on the cards when boxing cleverly to make the champion miss with heavy shots while he banged home solid punches of his own. A return match, this time round Thompson (189½) boxed within himself and although occasionally hurt he managed to avoid more than he was hit with. Unfortunately for Eubank, his left eye began to close up in the fifth and after going punch for punch with Thompson in the seventh it was closed shut at the bell. Thereafter, Eubank had little chance of winning when being caught by right hands he would normally avoided and at the end of the ninth the doctor advised the referee to call the fight off. At that point the scorecards showed Eubank leading 87-84, 87-84, 86-86.
