1998-07-18 Carl Thompson w rsc 9 Chris Eubank, The Arena, Sheffield, England - WBO. Referee: Paul Thomas. Making a great start the aggressive Eubank (189) took the opening six rounds on the cards when boxing cleverly to make the champion miss with heavy shots while banging home solid punches of his own. Boxing well within himself in what was a return match, although occasionally hurt Thompson (189½) managed to avoid more than he was hit with. When Eubank's left eye began to close up in the fifth it was ominous, and after going punch for punch with Thompson in the seventh it was closed shut at the bell. Thereafter, with Eubank having little chance of winning, being caught by right hands he would normally avoided, the doctor advised the referee to call the fight off at the end of the ninth. At that point the scorecards showed Eubank leading 87-84, 87-84, 86-86.
