1998-08-15 [[Luisito Espinosa]] w tdec 11 [[Juan Carlos Ramirez]], County Coliseum, El Paso, Texas, USA - WBC. Referee: Laurence Cole. Scorecards: 106-104, 105-104, 104-106. Following a slow start, the fight exploded into action in the third round when Ramirez (125) forced his way inside the champion’s longer reach to get heavy punches off before Espinosa (125½) settled down to dictate the pace. Although backed up by long-range combinations, Espinosa’s legs began to fail him in the ninth after he was belted by a barrage of heavy rights, and it looked as though his reign would be ended, especially after he came under great pressure in the tenth. With Espinosa still under attack in the 11th, controversy arose when a head clash left him with a deep gash over the left eye and the referee, deeming it too dangerous for him to continue, went to the scorecards on the 2.20 mark.
