1998-08-22 Harry Simon w pts 12 Ronald Wright, Carousel Resort Casino, Hammanskraal, South Africa - WBO. Referee: Samuel Viruet. Scorecards: 117-113, 115-113, 114-114. On becoming the first Namibian to win a world title, Simon (153¾) not only achieved a childhood dream but also created one of the biggest upsets ever associated with the weight class. Boxing to strict orders, the well-conditioned Simon took the fight to Wright (153¾) from the opening bell, never giving the speedy southpaw the time and room in which to work when staying right on top of him. Although Wright fought a good fight, Simon was inspired, throwing so many punches that it was difficult to score, and despite many rounds being close the ninth saw the champion forced to soak up terrific punishment. While there were no knockdowns, with the vast majority believing that Simon had won it came as a bit of a shock when it was announced that Wright had held on to his title by a majority draw. However, after it quickly transpired that one of the cards had been added up incorrectly Simon was given the win he so craved.
