1998-08-23 [[Cesar Bazan]] w pts 12 [[Hiroyuki Sakamoto]], The Arena, Yokohama, Japan - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 118-111, 118-110, 117-111. Charging in with swinging lefts and rights, Sakamoto (134¾) made it a difficult night’s work for the champion, despite the margins on the scorecards, and he was most dangerous before picking up a cut over the left eye in the seventh. However, by making Sakamoto miss and by blocking many of his blows, Bazan (134¾) gave himself room to get off accurate straight rights and solid uppercuts, which gave him the edge in all but two rounds. Always interesting, Bazan was just too clever overall for Sakamoto, but had to withstand a desperate last-round charge as the latter threw everything in but the kitchen sink.
