1998-09-04 Marc Johnson w rtd 6 Jose Laureano, Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Michael Ortega. Despite having to boil off four pounds to make the weight, Johnson (112) was as fast as ever, and even though he failed to reach his own high standard he still had too much of everything for Laureano (111). The challenger, who was always trying, was put down just before the end of round six and retired as soon as he got back to his corner.

Johnson vacated the title in November 1998 to fight at a heavier weight, which was eventually followed by Irene Pacheco and Luis Cox Coronado being matched to find a new champion. The IBF’s number-one contender at the time of Johnson handing in his belt was David Guerault, but after he lost his European crown Pacheco took on the ninth-ranked Coronado.
