1998-09-05 Richie Woodhall w pts 12 Glenn Catley, Ice Rink, Telford, England - WBC. Referee: Richie Davies. Scorecards: 116-113, 115-113, 114-114. Having trained to meet the southpaw Vincenzo Nardiello, the champion found himself making his first defence against the British middleweight title holder, Catley (167¾), who came in at short notice. Clearly out of sorts, Woodhall (166¾), who was cut over both eyes in the latter stages, admitted afterwards that he felt that Catley had won the fight, a statement that was supported by the British press. Boxing on the back foot almost throughout, Woodhall was certainly active but while many of his blows appeared not to land correctly it was clear that Catley, who threw less, hit the target more often and with greater force. The last third saw Catley gaining in confidence, especially when scoring well to the body, and after winning the final two sessions the vast majority, other than the judges, thought the title was about to change hands.
