1998-10-03 Floyd Mayweather w rtd 8 Genaro Hernandez, Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Jay Nady. A 1996 Olympian, Mayweather (130) became the first of that group to win a world title when he used his superior speed and power to overwhelm Hernandez (130) at times with blindingly fast flurries that exposed the champion the longer the fight went. Having used the opening round to have a good look at his opponent, Mayweather took off in round two and with speed and energy to burn he literally leapt in to action. At times it was messy as Hernandez tried to stem the flow of punches coming his way, but at the end of the eighth it was all over when he was retired by his corner who decided to call a halt to the beating.
