1998-10-30 Arthur Williams w rsc 9 Imamu Mayfield, Grand Casino, Biloxi, Mississippi, USA - IBF. Referee: Elmo Adolph. Although the challenger was dropped in the second round he came right back at Mayfield (186½), who seemed content to let his man off the hook, a tactic that would ultimately prove costly. Towards the end of the fourth Williams (187) finally got himself going, dropping Mayfield heavily with a heavy right to the head, and despite the latter being all over the shop he was unable to find a finishing blow. Hurt again in the fifth it looked as though Mayfield would not last too long, but he surprised Williams when putting him down with a left hook in the sixth. By now Mayfield was cut over the left eye, but after doing reasonably well in the next two sessions he came under a sustained attack in the ninth and following two knockdowns and lying on his back he was rescued by the referee on the 1.10 mark.
