1998-12-12 [[Fernando Vargas]] w rtd 7 [[Luis Ramon Campas]], Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF. Referee: Eddie Cotton. Charging out at the start of the fight, the champion soon found himself being nailed by long left jabs to the face and even when he responded more aggressively, Vargas (151) found the time to spin off the ropes to fire in solid rights. By the third, it had become apparent that Vargas could not miss Campas (151) with the jab and after being tagged solidly by left-rights the latter was badly cut over the right eye. Still Vargas took no untoward risks as he stuck with the jab and by the sixth, bit by bit, he was gradually breaking Campas down, having survived a last ditch onslaught in the previous session. With both eyes now busted up, Campas was having difficulty seeing Vargas in the seventh and the latter, sensing it was time to go, smashed in punches right to the bell to leave the champion in such a dazed state that he was retired by his corner immediately.
