1998-12-12 Nestor Garza w pts 12 Enrique Sanchez, Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California, USA - WBA. Referee: Lou Filippo. Scorecards: 116-111, 115-112, 114-112. Starting fast, the southpaw champion had Garza (122) on the deck in the first following a right counter and nearly downed his rival again in the second with a similar punch before being dropped himself in the third by a solid right. Suffering a broken nose and a swollen left eye, Sanchez (122) tried to get himself back into the fight, but lacking real firepower failed to exert enough pressure. Both men were cut over their eyes in the seventh, Garza above the right and Sanchez on the left, and by the end of the ninth the latter was also cut on the right eye. By then it was all one-way traffic, Garza looking to end it with remorseless combinations, but somehow the battered and bloodied Sanchez, fighting on the retreat, bravely made it to the final bell.
