1999-01-25 Jean-Baptiste Mendy w pts 12 Alberto Sicurella, Port of Versailles Sports Palace, Paris, France - WBA. Referee: Mitch Halpern. Scorecards: 118-110, 116-111, 117-112. Making the first defence of his new title, Mendy (134¾) was forced to break from his normal counter-punching routine when it became apparent that Sicurella (134½) was not prepared to take the initiative. With Mendy just going through the motions in the opening four sessions the fight failed to ignite until the fifth. It was then that the southpaw champion attacked Sicurella with a burst of combinations before sending the latter crashing into the ropes a round later with a solid left. Having taken the mandatory ‘eight’ count, Sicurella was almost dropped in the seventh from another powerful left prior to fighting back belatedly with left hooks and solid right hands in the ninth and 11th rounds to close the margin slightly.
