1999-02-06 Vuyani Bungu w rtd 8 Victor Llerena, Carousel Hotel & Casino, Hammanskraal, South Africa - IBF. Referee: Stan Christodoulou. Following a slow start, Bungu (121½) picked up the pace in the second round and took control from then on, consistently switching his attacks from head to body and having far too much variety for the challenger who threw his punches mainly from out of range. Although Llerena ( 121¾) was not floored, having soaked up so much punishment, especially to the body, after becoming frustrated by the speed and power of Bungu, as well as his inability to get into the fight, he refused to come off his stool for the eighth.

Immediately after the fight, Bungu announced that he was relinquishing his IBF version of the title to move up a weight and concentrate on getting a match against England’s Naseem Hamed. Following that, Lehlo Ledwaba and John Michael Johnson were matched to contest the vacant title.
