1999-03-13 Fernando Vargas w rsc 4 Howard Clarke, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - IBF. Referee: Wayne Kelly. Making his first defence against the little-known Clarke (154), the new champion had said that he wanted to fight a top opponent, but ended up meeting a man who squeezed into the ratings after defeating Jason Papillion. Although Clarke started confidently enough, Vargas (154) soon moved up a gear and before too long was firing in solid combinations to head and body. By the end of the third round Vargas was going far too well for Clarke and in the fourth the latter was dropped on one knee from a left to the body. Back on his feet, Clarke, who had given it his best shot, was in real trouble and after being floored three more times he was rescued by the referee at 2.29 of the session.
