1999-03-13 [[James Page]] w pts 12 [[Sam Garr]], Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Steve Smoger. Scorecards: 117-111, 119-108, 116-113. Forced to overcome several difficult moments, the champion was given a much tougher test by Garr (146¼) than had been expected, and after looking for an early knockout win was forced to get back to basics as his early blitz failed to bring results. While Garr probably won only three rounds, he was extremely well schooled with sound defensive qualities, and it was not until the sixth round that Page (147) connected solidly with rights to the head after bringing his left jab into play. From the eighth through to the 11th Page continued to score with heavy punches, but in the final session Garr came back with fast flurries before showboating down the stretch as if to prove that he belonged at this level.
