1999-03-13 Juan Carlos Gomez w pts 12 Marcelo Dominguez, Hanse Hall, Lubeck, Germany - WBC. Referee: Marty Denkin. Scorecards: 119-111, 119-111, 119-110. Defending his title against the man he won it from, Gomez (189½) was in charge all the way apart from when he got back to his corner at the end of the sixth and asked to be retired after feeling too tired to carry on. Luckily his corner talked him out of it, saying that Dominguez (188½) was just as exhausted as he was. There were no knockdowns due to Dominguez’s toughness, but the Argentinian was forced to take southpaw jabs and crosses all night as Gomez plied his trade. The contest had originally been set for 20 February, but was cancelled due to Gomez contracting flu.
