1999-03-13 Leo Gamez w rsc 3 Hugo Soto, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Carl Schroeder. On winning, Gamez (111) landed his third world title at different weights, having impressed with quick-fire lefts and rights from the opening bell. Although announced as a knockout, Soto (111), who had been down twice in the second, was rescued by the referee after 33 seconds of the third round when he had been floored again and the count had reached ‘six’. Later in the year, on 29 May at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gamez was due to defend against Josue Camacho, but when the later came in above the weight the promoter, Don King, requested that the match be sanctioned for the WBA super-flyweight title on the grounds that if Gamez won he would immediately return to the flyweight division. For the record, Gamez (114½) stopped Camacho (114) in the eighth round.
