1999-03-27 Johnny Nelson w rsc 5 Carl Thompson, Storm Arena, Derby, England - WBO. Referee: Paul Thomas. Finally putting the bad memory of his two previous attempts at winning a world title behind him, the switch-hitting Nelson (190) started well pumping out lefts and rights and continually had the champion bemused with his hand speed. At the end of the third round Nelson was already forging ahead and in the fourth a solid right hook dropped Thompson (189½), who although forced to take the mandatory ‘eight’ count when up at ‘three’ ultimately made it to the bell. Thompson had survived what had been a difficult couple of minutes, but in the fifth after taking several heavy shots without reply the referee decided that he was taking too much punishment and stopped the fight on the 1.42 mark. The decision prompted plenty of mixed feelings as Thompson, a man used to coming back from the brink, felt that he was able to fight on, as did many of those in attendance.
