1999-03-28 Jesus Rojas tdraw 4 Hideki Todaka, Prefectural Gym, Miyazaki, Japan - WBA. Referee: Julio Cesar Alvarado. Controversially the fight was stopped at 2.18 of the fourth round and declared a technical draw due to Rojas (115) having sustained a bad cut on his left eye. This came about after it was deemed by the referee, without consulting the doctor, too deep for the champion to carry on. Prior to that it had been hard fought with Rojas’ jab and countering right uppercuts against the aggression of Todaka (115), who concentrated on getting to close quarters. Unfortunately, it was this ploy that saw the damage done in the third, for which a point was deducted from Todaka.

On 29 May at the Roberto Clemente Stadium, San Juan, Puerto Rico, a fight which had originally been billed as a WBA flyweight title defence for Leo Gamez was changed to that of a contest for the ‘interim’ junior bantamweight title when his Puerto Rican challenger, Josue Camacho, came in over the weight, on the proviso that if Gamez won he would step back down to flyweight. For the record, Gamez scored an eighth-round stoppage win and continued to box at flyweight in the short term.
