1999-04-16 [[Manuel Medina]] w tdec 9 [[Victor Polo]], Orleans Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 87-83, 86-84, 86-84. The fight got off to a fair start with Polo (126) banging in a hard southpaw right to the jaw in the first and during the opening three rounds the champion found it difficult to work out his opponent’s awkward style. However, from the fifth through to the ninth he found the answer with solid body punches winning the rounds for him. Into the ninth there had been no knockdowns, but with both men looking to land decisively a terrible clash of heads saw Medina (126) emerge with a badly cut right eye, and although he kept going the referee was ultimately forced to call the doctor. There was no way the doctor was going to let the fight continue and with just one second of the round left the referee called for the cards.
