1999-05-08 Nestor Garza w rsc 8 Carlos Barreto, Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA. Referee: Mitch Halpern. With huge reach advantages in his favour, for nearly six rounds Barreto (121) seemed to be on his way to the title, his sharp lefts, right crosses and movement making it difficult for Garza (121) to overcome. However, things changed in the sixth as Garza, despite his left eye being swollen, finally raised the pace. At that point, it soon became apparent that the unfortunate challenger was beginning to run out of gas. Subsequently, it was all one-way traffic, and after Barreto had been shaken up by a heavy left hook to the head in the eighth the referee decided to save him from taking further punishment with a minute still left on the clock.

Due to defend his title against Carlos Navarro on 18 September, Garza was forced to pull out after injuring his back. A knee-jerk reaction then saw Antonio Cermeno outpoint his fellow Venezuelan, Yober Ortega, over 12 rounds to win the vacant WBA ‘interim’ title at the United Nations Park, Caracas, Venezuela on 9 October.
