1999-06-04 Jose Lopez Bueno w rsc 7 Igor Gerasimov, City Sports Centre, Malaga, Spain - WBO. Referee: Bill Connors. Making his first defence, Lopez Bueno (111½) quickly got down to business, working off the jab and looking to punish Gerasimov (111¾) whenever an opening presented itself. Although the challenger was mobile Lopez Bueno was the stronger, and in the sixth he began to work the body well. Having been deducted a point for rabbit punching in the previous session, in the seventh Gerasimov really came under the cosh, and when the champion again switched to the body he was in trouble. Dropped for ‘four’ by a left to the solar plexus, when the flat-nosed little Russian was back on his feet and looking as though he’d had enough the fight was stopped on the 2.10 mark.

Lopez Bueno forfeited the WBO version of the title in December 1999 following a motor-cycle accident that left him out of action for some while.
