1999-06-05 Joe Calzaghe w pts 12 Rick Thornberry, International Arena, Cardiff, Wales - WBO. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 120-107, 119-108, 119-109. Expected to despatch his challenger early, Calzaghe (167) was unable to do so despite having the Australian down in the second round for the mandatory ‘eight’ count and cut over the right eye. Even though Calzaghe toyed with Thornberry (167) at times he failed to floor his rival again, possibly due to suffering an injury to his left hand early on, and had to be content with a landslide points victory. Coming to the ring with 23 wins from 25 contests, Thornberry had no answer to the southpaw skills of the champion and had little to offer other than courage and pride.
