1999-06-12 [[Byron Mitchell]] w rsc 11 [[Frankie Liles]], Shriner’s Auditorium, Wilmington, Massachusetts, USA - WBA. Referee: Gerry Leone. Coming back after a torn rotator cuff injury to his right shoulder, the southpaw champion looked as though he would suffer an early defeat when he was dropped by a sweeping right uppercut to the temple in the second round. However, on getting up at ‘eight’, Liles (168) began to outbox and hurt Mitchell (168), who was unable to respond in kind until late in the ninth when lashing in heavy blows of his own. Regardless of that, Liles stuck to his boxing and by the end of the tenth had won all but one session, the second, on the judges’ cards. Finally, in the 11th, Mitchell found the punches that he had been looking for. After scoring two knockdowns he blasted Liles to the floor with a big right to the chin and when the latter got to his feet, his right eye bleeding badly, the referee called the fight off at 1.17 under the three-knockdowns in a round ruling.
