1999-07-17 Fernando Vargas w rsc 11 Raul Marquez, Caesar’s Palace, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Joe Cortez. It did not take long to see who was the better fighter and as early as the first round after the champion had scored with straight lead rights Marquez (153) was cut over the left eye, which then began to swell. Vargas (154) continued his offensive and it wasn’t until the fifth that Marquez came through with right-left combinations from his southpaw stance. Unfortunately for Marquez, who was now cut over the right eye, he was deducted a point in the sixth after dropping Vargas with a low blow and from thereon he continued to get the worse of it. Having gone well in the ninth, Vargas opened up in the 11th with solid combinations and after forcing Marquez around the ring, the latter was not fighting back when the referee made a sensible stoppage on the two-minute mark.
