1999-07-17 Fernando Vargas w rsc 11 Raul Marquez, Caesar’s Palace, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Joe Cortez. It did not take long to see who was the better fighter, and as early as the first round after the champion had scored with straight lead rights Marquez (153) was cut over the left eye which then began to swell. With Vargas (154) continuing his offensive it was not until the fifth that Marquez came through with right-left combinations from his southpaw stance. Unfortunately for Marquez, who was now cut over the right eye, he was deducted a point in the sixth after dropping Vargas with a low blow. Having gone well in the ninth, when Vargas opened up in the 11th with solid combinations to force Marquez around the ring the latter was not fighting back when the referee made a sensible stoppage on the two-minute mark.
