1999-07-17 Jason Matthews w co 2 Ryan Rhodes, The Dome, Doncaster, England - WBO. Referee: Mark Nelson. In a contest for the vacant title Rhodes (159¾) was a strong favourite to beat Matthews (159¾), but came unstuck after walking into a cracking right-hand counter in the opening round. Up at ‘five’, the switch-hitting Rhodes was forced to cover up until the end of the session before coming out for the second intent on knocking Matthews out instead of playing safe. He was soon made to pay, crashing to the floor from another right to the jaw and being counted out after just 28 seconds had elapsed. The new champion had taken the fight at just five days notice.
