1999-07-31 Michael Carbajal w rsc 11 Jorge Arce, The Bullring, Tijuana, Mexico - WBO. Referee: Raul Caiz. Behind on all the scorecards, badly cut over the right eye and on the verge of being pulled out, Carbajal (108) somehow found a great right hand to send the champion staggering into the ropes in the 11th round. With Arce (108) almost defenceless and Carbajal raining in punches, the referee jumped in to halt the action on the 1.53 mark. Carbajal, who had floored Arce in the sixth but had let his rival off the hook, was just a shell of a once great fighter.

After Carbajal announced his retirement in January 2000, the WBO matched Masibulele Makepula and Jacob Matlala for the vacant title.
