1999-08-21 Kostya Tszyu w rsc 10 Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Miccosukee Indian Gaming Reservation, Miami, Florida, USA - WBC. Referee: Frank Santore Jr. Following two years of postponements caused by injuries and promotional problems, the WBC finally had a 140lbs champion after the ‘interim’ titleholder, Tszyu (140), stopped Gonzalez (140) in the tenth. From the second round onwards it could be seen that Tszyu had the measure of Gonzales, rocking him with heavy rights to the head, and after the latter had a point taken away in the fourth for illegal use of the shoulder it was all one-way traffic. Gonzalez, who had been cut over the right eye as early as the opening session, was really up against it in the fifth, taking heavy punishment from there on in, and after 48 seconds of the tenth the referee was forced to call a halt when the Mexican’s corner were screaming for it to be stopped. For the purists, however, the fight should have seen Gonzalez disqualified at some stage for fouling throughout the fight with impunity, but for whatever reason he had just the one point deducted.
