1999-09-04 Sven Ottke w tdec 11 Thomas Tate, Borderland Hall, Magdeburg, Germany - IBF. Referee: Rafaele Argiolis. Scorecards: 97-93, 97-93, 96-94. Although Tate (165½) had a good opening round he was soon under pressure from the champion and rarely showed until the fifth when he shook his man up with solid blows to the head. From the sixth through the ninth it was virtually all Ottke (167½), scoring well with fast jabs and punches from both hands, which forced Tate on the back foot. With swellings over both eyes, the ninth round saw Tate deducted a point after the referee claimed that he had butted Ottke and cut his left eye when most ringsiders felt that damage had been done by a heavy right. Having been given time out, the dazed Ottke went on the back foot and after Tate had continued to work on the damaged eye the referee called the fight off 25 seconds into the 11th, stating that the scorecards should determine the outcome.
