1999-09-11 Freddie Norwood w pts 12 Juan Manuel Marquez, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 114-112, 115-111, 117-112. In a fight generally devoid of the jab and clean, quality punches, Norwood (126), cut over the left eye in the fourth, came through to successfully defend his title possibly because his blows were reckoned to be the harder and more effective. Both men scored knockdowns, Norwood’s coming in the second round following a short left to the head, and Marquez (125), after dropping Norwood in the eighth only to have it disallowed, came through in the ninth with a right-left. At that moment there was not much in it, but over the last two sessions when Marquez became surprisingly tentative the advantage passed to Norwood.
