1999-10-09 Noel Arambulet w pts 12 Jomo Gamboa, United Nations Park Coliseum, Caracas, Venezuela - WBA. Referee: Gustavo Padilla. Scorecards: 118-110, 119-111. 117-111. In order to find a new champion after Ricardo Lopez vacated, Arambulet (104¼), who was eventually matched against Gamboa (104¾), legged it all night to walk off with the points. Although many of Arambulet’s punches lacked power, more often than not they were scoring points, and he boxed a very clever, tactical fight in keeping out of the way of the Filipino’s much heaver shots coming his way.

Regardless of the result, Gamboa remained the WBA’s leading challenger. Rewarded with a fight against Satoru Abe for the vacant ‘interim’ title, Gamboa won it by way of a sixth-round stoppage at the Inai Sports Centre, Nagoya, Japan on 4 December.
