1999-10-31 Jong-Kwon Baek w pts 12 Lakva Sim, Kudok Gym, Pusan, South Korea - WBA. Referee: Stan Christodoulou. Scorecards: 114-113, 116-113, 112-115. Both men went hard at it from the opening bell, with the champion thought to have won the first three rounds, but from the fourth through to the tenth Baek (130) seemed to be winning it, often retaliating with non-stop blows from both hands after being hurt by solid punches. Sim (130) was always dangerous and despite being docked a point in the eighth for illegal use of the elbows he came on strong in the tenth to drop Baek with a short left hook. Upright again, Baek tried to keep out of trouble by circling the ring and even got through with several good shots before being sent reeling into the ropes as the contest ended. It had been close and difficult to score. Biding his time while waiting for a crack at the title, Joel Casamayor outpointed David Santos over 12 rounds at the Miccosukee Indian Gaming Resort, Miami, Florida on 20 November to successfully defend the WBA ‘interim’ crown.
