1999-11-29 Steve Johnston w pts 12 Billy Schwer, The Arena, Wembley, London, England - WBC. Referee: Larry O’Connell. Scorecards: 118-110, 118-110, 118-110. Banged up badly, his nose and left eye severely damaged, Schwer (134¾) gave it his best shot but was unable to step up a gear against the excellent southpaw champion, who just had too much of everything on the night. Schwer made a good start when pumping left jabs into Johnston’s face, but before too long the American was moving ahead as his right jabs and and solid lefts generally found their mark and even when he was cut over the right eye in the seventh there was no panic. Showing great spirit and durability, Schwer fought on looking for any opportunity, while Johnston (133¼) picked his punches from head to body and made a difficult target as he moved on to his fourth successful defence. Following the fight it was announced that Johnston had failed the post-fight drug test, but he escaped any form of censure due to the BBBoC and the WBC having different drug testing proctocols.

Banged up badly, his nose and left eye severely damaged, Schwer (134¾) gave it his best shot but was unable to step up a gear against the excellent southpaw champion, who just had too much of everything on the night. Schwer made a good start when pumping left jabs into Johnston’s face, but before too long the American was moving ahead as his right jabs and solid lefts generally found their mark, and even when he was cut over the right eye in the seventh there was no panic.
