1999-12-04 Fernando Vargas w pts 12 Ronald Wright, Chinook Winds Casino, Lincoln City, Oregon, USA - IBF. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 116-112, 115-113, 114-114. Although the unbeaten champion started confidently, the clever Wright (154) was soon making life difficult for him, forging ahead by the end of the seventh having used the southpaw jab as a great points scorer. Wright had also matched Vargas (154) punch for punch generally at that stage, but by the tenth the latter had just about got his nose in front after stepping up his work to the body. The last three rounds were extremely close, and following the majority verdict in Vargas’ favour there were many who felt that Wright’s cleaner punching deserved better.
