2000-09-04 Mauricio Martinez w rsc 5 Lester Fuentes, Wythenshawe Forum, Manchester, England - WBO. Referee: Mickey Vann. Fighting for the title vacated by Johnny Tapia, Martinez (117¼) survived three knockdowns prior to round five as well as picking up a bad cut around his right eye to somehow stay in the fight, let alone win it. Most of the spectators were expecting Martinez to be pulled out before the fifth session began, but come out he did to find a strangely tired Fuentes (116¾) in front of him. Thus, it was with added confidence that the Panamanian southpaw started to get his punches off big time. Having been nailed by right after right, Fuentes suddenly stumbled into the ropes before another shot dumped him unconscious beneath the ropes, whereupon the referee called it off immediately.
